Meet Skypuzzler’s DevOps Engineer, Daniel Thamdrup

Daniel Thamdrup is Skypuzzler’s DevOps Engineer. He is part of the technical team and supports the integration of the product and platform. For more than 25 years, Daniel has been fiddling with PC’s and IT, with a special interest in infrastructure, networking and security.

In this sixth release of our Meet the Team series, Daniel Thamdrup takes us along on his everyday work at Skypuzzler.

What is your educational background?

I’m a self-taught IT nerd who has special interests in areas such as infrastructure, networking and security. Based on that, it was a natural decision for me to apply my interest in the professional field, giving me more than 25  years of combined experience working with PC’s, servers and IT equipment. My previous work areas span Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), Cloud Infrastructure and on-premises server environments, all of it involving CI/CD, automation and containerization. This heavily relates to my tasks at Skypuzzler, where I support the integration and further development of the product and server infrastructure.
Daniel has been fiddling with PC's and IT for 25 years as a hobby and has worked with it professionally for the past 8 years.

What aspect of your role as DevOps Engineer do you find most rewarding?

My broad general knowledge and varied experiences are a good addition to the team, as I can help with many aspects of the product and give some non-developer insights. I really like supporting our developers in making a system that can deploy the code and make their everyday tasks easier. What I especially find rewarding is seeing the product go from work-in-progress (WIP) or minimum viable product (MVP) to running and evolving in the real world on systems I helped build. I’m, for that reason, really looking forward to seeing how our product will integrate with customers and the platforms they have in use.

Describe a typical day working for Skypuzzler

Our flexible work structure makes it possible for us to decide where we would like to work. Personally, I prefer to go into the office and work from there. A typical day would start with me dropping off my kid at daycare. Then I hop on the metro to Kongens Nytorv.  The office is located right next to the metro, so it’s very convenient for me, less than 25 minutes to and from work. The working day then really begins with a daily morning meeting with the rest of the Technical Team. It is a good way to brief each other on current tasks and changes, and to keep an open and transparent work environment. No days are the same as I get to work on the tasks in my current iteration, but a day doesn’t go by where I don’t have a couple of ad-hoc things as well.

After a day at the office, I like (to)

IT infrastructure / homelab / self-hosting

Even though I work with IT professionally, it is still a great hobby of mine. I enjoy running and setting up services that I use every day for communication, privacy, home media consumption, etc. It should make my life easier, but sometimes it’s like having an extra job.

Gaming

I enjoy playing PC games and especially together with friends. Occasionally, I will play something on my PlayStation 5 if I just want to sit in the sofa and relax. Having different consoles and platforms to choose from is nice as they provide different experiences.

Head-fi and hi-fi

Another big interest of mine is Hi-Fi audio, specifically Head-Fi. Being able to configure a system of different components and find the ones that have a great synergy and give you the sound you are looking for is a great experience when it all comes together. It’s a pricey hobby, but luckily, there are affordable options out there that help facilitate this great hobby to more people, myself included.
